As the clocks turn back, the team here at Pied A Terre look forward to the forthcoming winter months…
With the frosty mornings and dark evenings approaching, we need to take a look at the preparations we make ahead of our trips as well as the kit we take. As always, the age-old scouting moto ‘be prepared’ rings as true as ever and becomes particularly relevant as we look to enjoy the great outdoors in varying conditions.
We wanted to briefly share our thoughts on how to prepare for winter, so that we can continue to enjoy everything the outdoors has to offer throughout the more chillier months.
The Weather Forecast
We are no strangers to the varied climate here in the UK, with what’s been a rather changeable Summer in comparison to past years…ensuring that you’re prepared for all eventualities is of paramount importance. Carrying an extra layer (and triple checking those waterproofs are packed!) will help combat any change in the forecast and ultimately make for a more enjoyable day out – which is what it’s all about.
Head Torch
With the clocks going back, daylight hours become drastically shorter. It’s all too easy to get caught out by the light, so making sure your torch is packed will save you significant hassle…
Map & Compass
Just because it’s colder doesn’t mean we forget the basics! Ensuring you not only have a map & compass, but the ability to use them both in and out of daylight will offer a sense of reassurance when undergoing your adventures. If you want to sharpen your skills or are just looking for a refresher, then have a look on our website where we have plenty of courses running throughout the winter months.
Hot Beverage
Maybe not essential…but we would argue otherwise! Enjoying a flask of tea or hot chocolate whilst taking in a beautiful wintery landscape remains one of our favourite moments on a winter walk. Made even better when accompanied with a hearty slice of cake (if Maggie hasn’t beaten us to it!)
‘Kit Faff!’
Whether a good kit faff is the sign of extreme organisation or a lack of it, is still up for debate. However, knowing where your kit is in your rucksack before darkness hits will save you the stress and hassle of having to sift through your rucksack in the dark. Putting your headtorch, spare layer and snacks in an accessible place will prevent the infamous kit ‘starburst’ and potentially things getting mislaid.
With this in hand, we look forward to hearing about your winter adventures and to seeing you on the hill.
Stay safe!
