In a rapidly changing and technological world, finding the time to slow down and take a breath of fresh air is a small change that can make a huge difference. The modern world has placed huge emphasis on “the next big thing” and a search for instant gratification. People find themselves one scroll or click away from something different, making everything seem so consuming and in some cases out of control. We wanted to discuss the key benefits of stepping outside of this seemingly endless loop and venturing into the outdoors.
The benefits of walking and the outdoors can be beneficial for both your mental and physical health. Not only does the rhythm of walking and the exposure to nature, provide a calming effect on your mind but it also provides a low impact form of exercise. Scientifically, walking can greatly improve your cardiovascular health. With the movement of walking helping blood flow and after a prolonged period of time can reduce blood pressure. Walking is something that can cater for all fitness levels and in conjunction with a healthy, well balanced diet, can be an incredibly effective form of weight management. However, the biggest benefit is that it’s free and requires no equipment (other than a good pair of walking shoes), you can simply lace up and go for as long as you like.
Mentally, taking yourself for a walk and surrounding yourself with nature, is one of the best forms of meditation. Being in that environment, away from the world of technology and social media, has an amazing calming effect. This has been linked to the reduction of stress hormones and the releasing of endorphins, which is a natural way for the body to raise your mood. Being in a natural environment also helps improve concentration and focus as your mind is given the freedom to explore and appreciate a wide variety of sensations.
Often the social aspect of walking is forgotten, giving weight to the age old concept of ‘walking and talking’. Whether this is with friends, family or a pet, going for a walk is an excellent way to socialise. The PAT team also all agree that people are generally so much more friendly on walks, with people saying a friendly hello as they pass by. This is something that wouldn’t necessarily happen when walking down the high-street for example.
Overall, in a world that moves and changes too quickly, taking time for yourself outdoors and surrounding yourself in nature proves to be one of the best ways to calm and reflect on your thoughts. Stepping outside of the technological sphere that the modern world has placed great emphasis on and allowing your mind to wonder into the great outdoors can make a huge difference. This combined with the physical benefits of walking, makes it something you have to try…we look forward to seeing you out there!
